Today's photos are from the amazing LIFE magazine photo archive, from a series called "Mobile Laundry" taken by LIFE photographer Ralph Morse in September, 1944. At the time, Morse was accompanying General Patton's Third Army across France toward Germany. Above, having stripped off their uniforms to be washed in the laundry truck, the American troops wait in line to take a shower. The second guy from the right is giving us a peekaboo view.

The mobile laundry facility included a portable shower tent, with equipment on a truck to pump the water.

All the facility needed was a water source, which was provided via a hose from a nearby stream or pond.

Showers were a luxury for troops on the front, so they took full advantage of the mobile laundry.

The location of these photos was not given, but in September, 1944, Patton's army was in eastern France. The stone house in the background looks very French. But maybe you weren't looking at the house.

The sense of camraderie must have been very strong, and in those days, having a cock and sack was not something men were taught to be ashamed of, so these mobile showers were probably greeted with relief and happiness.
