Performers - Part 62

Ed Fury

Ed Fury (1928-2023) was an American actor and bodybuilder.

Born Robert Edmund Holovchik, he went under the name Ed Fury for his acting career.  After moving to Los Angeles in the late 1940s, he began getting uncredited bit parts in movies such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, 1953 with Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell.  Ed's role was one of the Olympic team members on the cruise ship that Marilyn and Jane are traveling across the Atlantic on.  The clip above is part of Jane Russell's song Ain't There Anyone Here For Love.  Ed is one of the athletes exercising on the floor and shaking their booties.

However, Ed finally became a "star" by going to Rome and starring in some Italian-made "sword and sandal" films like Mighty Ursus, above.

Returning to the U.S., he worked mostly in television, and he was back to playing bit parts.  Above, that's him in the background in one of the Star Trek episodes.

His bodybuilding career was somewhat more successful.  He won the Mr. Florida competition in 1958, and he appeared in countless muscle and physique magazines in the 1950s.  He also did nude modeling for physique photographers like Bob Mizer of AMG, above.  I got this photo from Vintage Muscle Men.  Thanks, Jerry!

An AMG photo with a sword as a prop.

Posing with the sword.  En garde!

And here's a "make a muscle" pose by the rocks.

He also posed nude for physique photographer Bruce of L.A.

Another Bruce of L.A. photo of Ed at the beach.  This time he seems to have blond streaks in his hair.  I also got this photo from Vintage Muscle Men.  Thanks, Jerry!

And another "make a muscle" photo.

We end with a 1954 photo of Ed on a bearskin rug by Frank Collier.

Ed died in 2023 at the age of 94.

The "Ain't There Anyone Here For Love" clip is quite interesting. I count 16 hunks on display for our viewing pleasure. The skin tight tan trunks seem deliberately designed for erotic effect. Were it not for the black-edged line, the tan flesh-colored trunks have the effect of making the men appear completely naked. Thanks for finding this clip of Jane Russell and his 16 friends!

Always enjoy your site, and love Ed Fury. The color photo is of James Selig by Denny Denfield. Best in the New Year.

Ed Fury née Holovchik went from a bodybuilding student at Manual Arts High School in L.A. to become one of the most renowned models in physique photography.
Nice sweet ass photos at the desert and on the beach, and a daring for its time taint shot taken at photographer Frank Collier’s apartment in Norfolk VA in the final photo. Ed Fury got around, from California to Florida to Virginia and Italy !

Physique models John Weidemann, Kip Behar, Steve Reeves and Jane Russel’s brother James Russell were also in the full gym scene from
Gentleman Prefer Blondes. The gym scene was homoerotic because Jack Cole was the choreographer and the costumes were by Travilla, as both men were gay. Jack Cole also directed the scene because Howard Hawks didn’t know a damned thing about directing dance and musical numbers. -Rj
