Vintage Military - Part 51

 Conscription and Recruiting, Other Countries

I end my series on conscription and recruiting with photos from various other countries not already covered.  Above, the New Zealand Rifle Brigade training in New Zealand during World War I, 1914-1918.

This was described as "future soldier physical exam" in Austria in 1935.

We've already seen this Finnish recruit learning to ride bareback in 1943.

Finnish military cadets taking a steam bath, photographed by LIFE photographer Mark Kauffman in 1948.

Basic training in the Czechoslovak People's Army, 1982.  Is the guy is lying in a trough urinal? But it has so many faucets, maybe it's some kind of wash basin.

We end with a photo of enlistment at the Siklós Pécs Border Guard Training Base in Hungary in 1983.  Some of the enlistees are wearing towels for modesty, but our friend in front is unashamed.

Nude recruits are the best recruits.
