New Year's Dive
The Dutch have a New Year's tradition called Nieuwjaarsduik, or New Year's Dive. On January 1, they run into the freezing ocean and back again.
The tradition started in 1960 when a swim club decided to start the year fresh with a dip in the sea. It received national attention when a brand of soup decided to sponsor it. Now, 25,000 people participate each year, including 10,000 people in Scheveningen, above, the most popular location. Most of the participants wear swimsuits ...
but there's always that one guy (above, in Scheveningen).
The New Year's Dive is also done in many other locations, and in some of them the participants skinny-dip, like here in 2015 ...
and here in 2017 ...
and here in 2018 ...
and at least one guy here in 2023.
We end with a video clip from 2019.
My blog is now three years old. Happy New Year to all of you!

Happy Anniversary to your blog, Larry!
You and I started our own blog around the same time, are both posting daily and so far have reached the same amount of followers, many of them we probably have in common :-)
Although our blogs are not equally oriented, yours being much more educational, I like to think that they are complementary. Add Pat's @bigwhackatttack, Rick's @sickoricko, Mark's @voenixrising and Maddie's etc
And I humbly believe the whole lot of us make a pretty nice assembly, don't you think?
(or am I being pretentious?)
Anyway, thank you again for all the interesting events and stories you provide us with.
I wish you and the people you love a Happy New Year, as well as many more to come.
Cheers!
Laurent
Happy New Year, and thank you for your fun and educational site!!
I fully understand doing that naked. Getting out of (damn near) ice cold water with sopping wet clothes to remove to dry off and get warm...well, Yikes!!
Happy New Year, Larry. Thanks for your blog. It's always fun and informative and, of course, moreover IMO, it promotes pride of the male body.
Happy Birthday #3. Keep the good times rolling!
Happy New Year Larry!
Are New Year's plunges done in the Southern Hemisphere?
@BatRedneck - Happy New Year, Laurent! Thank you for your kind words. And I agree that your blog and mine and the others you mention make a very nice assembly. -Larry
