Fall Equinox 2024

Fall Equinox

Today is the Fall Equinox in the U.S.  In Britain it's called the Autumnal Equinox.  Every year since 2012, the equinox has been celebrated there by holding the annual North East Skinny Dip at Druridge Bay in Northumberland, England.  This year the event will be held at dawn next Sunday, Sept. 29.

Above, participants run into the North Sea in 2012.

The crowd gathers on the beach before sunrise.  Then, when the sun appears, everyone runs naked into the North Sea.  Above, a video from 2018.

A beautiful view in 2017.  And the sunrise was beautiful, too.

The North Sea is cold, so participants take a quick dip and return to the beach.  But it's fun, and who knows, you might make a naked friend like this guy.

The event raises money for MIND, a mental health charity.  Since 2012 they have raised over £120,000 ($157,000).

Here in Alaska we have the Equinox Marathon, one of the most difficult in the world. Ours was run yesterday. Unfortunately, there are no nude contestants. Most of the contestants are not runners at all, and just hike, but we do have very serious runners. It was very cool and somewhat rainy yesterday. The course travels up steep hills and down a ski slope for part of the course.
