Photographers - Part 41

Kito Muñoz

Kito Muñoz was born in Cadiz, Spain, in 1997.  He is currently based in Paris.

In an interview, he said, "I started when I was sixteen years old photographing my first boyfriend in the bathtub, wrapped in sheets, having breakfast naked at home. Without knowing it, those situations clicked in my mind and I started to become interested in homoerotic photography and its history, with Vicenzo Galdi, George Platt Lynes, Bob Mizer, and many others."

"Now that I have full creative freedom in my projects, I like to suggest confusing ideas. I like people to stare at my work and think: 'Is that a fashion campaign or a magazine cover from the ‘70s? Or is it an extract of a movie, or the behind the scenes of a porn movie?' Anything but a conventional fashion photograph."

"For me, it is really important to separate your personal life and your work, and above all when there is nudity. Even when I started experimenting with my boyfriend photographing him, those photos were carefully thought out."

He has done a lot of work for Dust magazine, including the covers above.

More covers for Dust magazine.

The photos above were labeled "Dust editorial," but they look more like the familiar clothed/unclothed genre.

This page looks like a set of portraits of young people.  Kind of boring.

But then we see the bottom halves of the same people.  Not so boring!

We end with this photo, called "Valentino," showing a naked guy with a Valentino purse.  Is it an ad?  A fashion shot?  A porn shot?  If Muñoz's goal is to suggest confusing ideas, he has succeeded.  By the way, note that the girl's earring is also the Valentino symbol.  It may look like a spontaneous shot, but as he says, his photos are "carefully thought out".

I definitely like the picture showing the 'bottom half' the best. This young photographer is very interesting.

The top-half vs. bottom half one is so interesting when you look closely. The bottom row, second from left person is either a trans man or different people wearing the same outfit. I’m inclined to think it’s the latter, since the bottom half seems chubbier than the top. The black man is the only one who’s circumcised - probably he or his parents are from an African country where it is practiced (whether Muslim or not). The two men standing side-by-side illustrates something I find interesting - men whose balls hang lower than their dicks vs. men whose dicks hang lower than their balls. They are all really creative - and feature beautiful unashamed naked men.
