Big Yellow Taxi
Big Yellow Taxi was a 1970 song by Joni Mitchell, perhaps best known for its refrain "They paved paradise, put up a parking lot."
I cut out one verse "Hey, farmer, farmer, put away that DDT now" and accompanied the song with images of parking lots and other things.
The song was inspired by Joni Mitchell's visit to Honolulu. "They took all the trees and put 'em in a tree museum" refers to the Foster Botanical Garden in Honolulu. I used a photo of a different "tree museum," one that didn't have live trees, and my other images are not from Honolulu either, except for the pink hotel, which is the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on Waikiki Beach.
Honolulu is a city, so it's full of people and cars and parking lots. I live in Hawaii, and I can say that most of Hawaii is not like Honolulu. But the song was (and still is) a badly-needed environmental wake-up call.
