Oppikoppi
Oppikoppi is an annual music festival in the South African province of Limpopo. The name comes from Afrikaans "op die koppie" (on the hill), because the music is played on a series of stages on and around a hill. It started as a rock festival in 1995 but has since expanded to 160 concerts over three days with different kinds of music on multiple stages, including rock, hip-hop, hardcore, punk, ska, folk, blues, drum & bass, big beats, Kwaito, jazz, metal, indie, soul, funk, traditional, world music, and others.
Most festival attendees camp in a huge campground called Mordor at the base of the hill. The name is a clue that it's not an idyllic experience, particularly because August, when the festival is held, is in the dry season, and dust is everywhere. One festival motto is "in dust we trust."
But our main interest is that Oppikoppi also features a naked run, which is sometimes called the naked mile, although it's not a mile long. Here's the race in 2016.
Another shot from the 2016 race. Why are some runners wearing face coverings? Because of the dust.
This 2016 photo was not labeled, but I'm guessing it's some runners either going to or coming back from the race.
The 2017 festival was held in October instead of August, and October is the start of the rainy season. The track was quite muddy ...
and even more slip-ups.
And here's the 2017 winner, a guy named Bradley.
