Ads - Part 66

 Valentino

In 1995, Italian fashion designer Valentino launched a series of ads featuring model Christy Turlington wearing his creations and posing with one or more nude men.  The ad above was in Vogue Italia magazine in September, 1995.

Ads were also run in U.S. magazines and newspapers.

The ads were shot by gay fashion photographer Herb Ritts in Miami Beach.  The male models were found during a casting campaign in Miami.

An editorial in the Vatican newspaper blasted the use of nude models by Valentino.  It was "ethically reprehensible" and "disgusting" and it risked "the end of fashion itself," according to Father Gino Concetti, a theologian close to Pope John Paul.

But the Pope and his advisors may not be the greatest authorities on fashion.

Apparently the ads were successful.  However, I must admit I wasn't paying much attention to the fashions that Christy is wearing in the ads – my eyes may have strayed elsewhere.
