Bill Bradley (left foreground) was on the U.S. basketball team that won a gold medal in 1964. This photo is from 1967 during Bradley's pro basketball career with the New York Knicks. Later, he became a U.S. Senator.
The 1968 Olympics were held in Mexico City. Above, American runners Tommie Smith and John Carlos, gold and bronze medalists for the 200 meter run, make the Black Power salute. As a result of this peaceful protest against U.S. racism, they were suspended from the team, sent home, and barred from future Olympics. Smith's athletic career was over, despite the fact that he set a new world record in the event, making him the fastest man in the world.
The 1972 Olympics were held in Munich, Germany. The athletic events were unfortunately overshadowed by the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches by Palestinian militants.

But some of the athletes in 1972 were spectacular. U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz won seven gold medals, a record that was not surpassed until Michael Phelps won 8 gold medals in 2008. Spitz had also won two gold medals at the 1968 Olympics.

The 1976 Olympics were held in Montreal, Canada. This poster seems to transform the Olympic rings into someone giving us the finger.
German boxer Rene Weller competed in the 1976 Olympics.
As did U.S. diver Greg Louganis, who won a silver medal in 1976 plus gold medals in later Olympics.

I sure remember the excitement and celebrations around Mark's record win. I don't think anyone will ever outdo Michael Phelps total golds.

The 1976 Montreal Olympic's lgo was more, on top, for the «M» in Montreal than any other significations. Sure for some twisted minds it could represent fingers or maybe three dicks etc.. I live in Montreal and very close to the Olympic Sadium which was, and still is, a constant conterversy by it's special architecture.
The 64 Olympics presented Japan as a first world country and were a success.:) The 68 Olympics in Mexico City and 72 Olympics in Munich were both marred by violence; and the 76 Olympics in Montreal was a financial debacle. :(
These bad Olympics of 68, 72 and 76 nonetheless had glimmers of gold. :)

The logo for 1976 have a sort of M for Montréal over the rings. The higher middle "curve" singified Mont Royal which is is the small mountain in middle of city.
1976 was also the olympics where Bruce Jenner (now Kaitlyn Jenner) won a lot of medals and got the big advertising contracts for cereals and was a symbol of a perfect man.
