Olympics - Part 5

 Olympics 1956, 1960

The 1956 Olympic Games were held in Melbourne, Australia.

Australian swimmer John Devitt (above) won a gold medal in 1956 and another gold medal in 1960.  It's hard to tell, but I think this is a nude practice swim.

British boxer Terry Spinks (at left) won a gold medal in 1956.  Here he is shaking hands with opponent Johnny Mantle at a boxing match in 1962.

The 1960 Olympic Games were held in Rome.  This poster is an artist's impression of the nude Discobolus (discus thrower) statue

Here is U.S. boxer Cassius Clay weighing in at the Rome Olympics.  He won a gold medal.  Later, he changed his name to Muhammad Ali.  He is regarded by many as the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time.

Australian runner Herb Elliott won a gold medal.  We see him here climbing a rope with his trainer Percy Cerutty looking on.  And there's something peeking out under his shorts.

Mexican boxer Vicente Saldivar competed in the Rome Olympics but lost.  Later, he became the world featherweight boxing champion.  We see him here weighing in for a fight in 1965.

U.S. gymnast Don Tonry competed in the Rome Olympics. Later, he was a coach at Yale University for 43 years.  Above, Don Tonry posing for Lon of New York.

We end with an unusual physique photo of U.S. swimmer Jeff Farrell, who won two gold medals at the Rome Olympics.  Above, he was featured in ESPN's The Body Issue in 2010 at age 73.  You're never too old to be naked.

Next time: Olympic Games 1964 to 1976.

Very interesting! Thanks, Larry. Isn't it too bad we don't have photos of the ancient Greek Olympics, where only me were allowed to compete or attend? And the contestants were all naked...

It's been funny to hear the republicans clutching their pearls over the opening ceremonies and then see the response within memes showing the athletes naked.

Nice bit of history.

For fun, you can search for a partly educational, partly comic reenactment of a handful of ancient Olympic events by the Try Guys.
