Redwoods
Previously, we saw Sequoia National Park. The other big trees in California are redwoods, the tallest trees in the world. They're not as big in diameter as sequoias, but they're still big.
Here's one of our favorite unashamed males, the late Kirill Tokarev, posing by a redwood with a burned-out interior.
Here's Kirill and a friend trying to tree-hug a redwood. It's going to take more than two guys to do that ...
like these redwood tree-huggers in 2011. This was a protest organized by Jack Gescheidt's Tree Sprit Project to protest a proposed widening of the road, California Route 101, that would have removed some of the redwoods.
Sequoias grow at the edge of the Sierras, but redwoods grow along the coast of northern California. Route 101, the main north-south coastal road, goes through several parks that protect groves of redwoods.
This is another Tree Sprit Project protest in 2013 where people got naked to save a grove of redwood trees. The photo is called In the Land of the Ancients.
Other environmentalists protested redwood logging in 1990 for a project called Redwood Summer. In this photo, I think they were taking a break from their protest.
Here's a hiker in a pool in a redwood forest.
Here's another hiker in a redwood forest. After this photo shoot, he got poison oak on his butt. Advice to hikers: learn to recognize poison oak (if you live in the West) or poison ivy (if you live in the East), whether you hike naked or not.
We end with a short clip from the movie Redwoods (2009), which one reviewer described as a gay version of Bridges of Madison County set among the redwoods of northern California. No redwoods are visible in this clip, but something else is visible.
