Hiking - Part 33

Vermont

Did you know that in Vermont it's legal to be naked in public, but it's illegal to disrobe in public?  The photo above is a place called The Ledges, located on Harriman Reservoir in the town of Wilmington, Vermont.

In the 1970s, an overzealous Vermont prosecutor jailed a man for skinny-dipping in a river.  The jailing sparked outrage, since the public had no problem with skinny-dipping.  The police asked the state's attorney's office to weigh in.  State's attorney Patrick Leahy determined that most Vermonters had engaged in skinny-dipping at some time in their lives, and ruled that public nudity was acceptable as long as nobody was offended.

Above: jumping into the reservoir with a rope swing at The Ledges.

Then in 2001, a grandmother who owned a cabin on the reservoir said she was offended by seeing full-frontal nudity at The Ledges, and the town council banned nudity.  However, the grandmother's cabin was so far from The Ledges that she couldn't have seen much without using binoculars, and a citizen's group rallied public support to overturn the ban.  Today, The Ledges is one of the best-known clothing-optional parks in New England.

Vermont is the Green Mountain State, and the Appalachian Trail, known locally as the Long Trail, runs through its mountains.  Above, a hiker on the Long Trail.

Another view of the same hiker.

And here he is on a different trail, on Mt. Philo, overlooking Lake Champlain.

This hiker is on top of Mt. Mansfield on the Mansfield Ridge Trail

Vermont is also known for its covered bridges.  There appears to be a naked troll living under this bridge ...

And like all trolls, he's demanding that you give him something before you can cross the bridge.

A section of the Rock River in Newfane, Vermont, has become a favorite place for gay men to skinny-dip (and a favorite cruising spot).  This is Jeff at Rock River.

And nearby in Newfane is Frog Meadow Farm, a gay bed & breakfast and massage center.

There's a network of trails around Frog Meadow for those who want to hike au naturel.

Another hiker at Frog Meadow.

Frog Meadow was also the location for a series of videos by Davey Wavey, who covers LGBT topics related to sex, relationships, and coming out.  For his TV platform Himeros.tv, he filmed a series of "Sacred Sex" videos at Frog Meadow that featured a lot of gay sex.  We will end with a short clip from a trailer for one of the videos, called "Matrimony."

Vermont is just two hours ride from here, Montreal.
I have a friend living there near Burlington.

Did you know that in the early 20th century French was widely spoken there.
Many French Québécois were working there.
One of my uncle even was born there in the 20'S (1920's).

We also have some naked beaches here.
One of them is in the Oka National Park west of Montreal.

@Xersex - thanks for the Drew Dixon link.

@JiEL - Vermont has deep French roots. It was named "vert mont" (green mountain) by French explorer Samuel de Champlain, after whom Lake Champlain is named, and it is still called the Green Mountain state to this day.

Oh, what a wonderful place! One of my readers (fullmoonma) has a place in Vt and regularly walks naked and visits a nude spot on a river. I wish nudity was acceptable everywhere. it is such a freeing sensation!

Early 2000s, one afternoon at Rock River, a guy called me Jesus Christ because I "gave to the masses". When I gave up driving, I bought a kayak and paddled to a spot on the West River, now a "No Nudity" public park. Never cared for The Ledges, though.
