Boys and Their Balls - Part 32

 Beach Volleyball

Olympic beach volleyball is the most ludicrous addition to the Olympics since synchronized swimming.  It is widely believed that the reason beach volleyball was added was to draw viewers who like to see women running around in bikinis.  Above, some Olympic women's beach volleyball players.  They are allowed to wear bikinis, although they can wear more if they want to.

What makes it ridiculous is that male Olympic beach volleyball players are required to wear tank tops.  Above are some male Olympic beach volleyball players.  They are not allowed to play shirtless, even though in real life, men are shirtless, and play beach volleyball shirtless, on beaches all over the world.

The Olympic organization claims that the tank tops are necessary so that the team's country can be displayed.  Of course, this is bogus; Olympic male swimmers and divers go shirtless, and it's not a problem.  So, we're back to the real reason for Olympic beach volleyball: so hetero men can see women in bikinis.

On nude beaches, of course, people play beach volleyball in the nude.  Above is a beach volleyball game played at Taylor Camp on the island of Kauai when it was a hippie community in the 1970s, before the area became part of Hawaii's Haena state park.

Here's a photo of some guys playing beach volleyball from Andrew Kennedy's 1987 book Shore Leave.

Beach volleyball is popular at nude beaches everywhere.  This is Gunnison Beach, New Jersey.

Baker's Beach, San Francisco.

Maspalomas Beach in the Canary Islands.

Zipolite Beach, Oaxaca, Mexico.

We end with a video of some guys playing beach volleyball on Black's Beach in San Diego.  Full disclosure: these are not some random beach-goers.  The video maker selected the players for their good looks, but they seem to be having fun, and we're having fun watching them.

If the Olympic Committee wants to increase interest and audience for the Olympics, here's an idea: specify that, like the ancient Olympics, all Olympic athletes must compete naked.

With the exception of the first pic, all the players are male.(Hooray!) Are the beaches mainly male homosexual places?

Thanks for the fun post!

I wonder if someone could challenge their use of the name "Olympics" if the players aren't in the nude as they were in the real Olympics? ;-)

@Big Dude - Nude beaches are used by both men and women, but many of them have a section (often at one end of the beach) where gay men hang out together.

@orbearbear - You could challenge the name "Olympics", but you wouldn't win. You'd have better grounds for challenging your local gym if they didn't allow naked exercise, because the word "gymnasium" literally means a place to exercise naked, from the Greek "gymnos" (naked), because ancient Greeks always exercised in the nude.

There is a straight porn film for the 1980s that has a beginning scene with several guys playing naked volleyball. Not women in the scene and it goes for quite a while, and includes dialogue between the men, as if getting together to play naked volleyball was something very common. Can't remember the name of the flick right now, but I will try to find that and the time marker in the film. Chances are it is posted somewhere on line.

That straight porn film is called Surf, Sand, and Sex, and it is posted on xhamster. It's quite silly, but the all male nude volleyball sequence (3 men) begins around time market 15:30. At 16:50 it break away for a boy on girl scene and a lesbian group scene. Those girls get bored and then go to round up the make volleyball players, and then bury them in the sand. Please don't think I am making this up.

All males participating in summer Olympics should be totally nude, without a stitch on. This rule would increase viewership 100%.

Naked curling! Can't wait!

@Anonymous - I found the film (Barbara Dare's Surf, Sand and Sex) and you're right, there's a male nude volleyball scene. The film is on several other websites, too, but unfortunately, none of them are better quality than 240p, which is very low. But thanks for the tip.
