Weighing In - Part 18

Marco McCullough

Marco McCullough, born in 1989, is a Northern Irish featherweight boxer, now retired.  This video shows him weighing in at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England for a fight against Isaac Lowe for the Commonwealth Featherweight title in 2016 (McCullough lost).  The officials didn't seem very well prepared – one of them holds up his jacket to block the audience view when McCullough strips, because apparently nobody brought a towel – but our videographer was far enough to the side to see around the jacket.  We get a glimpse of McCullough both when he strips and when he puts his shorts back on.

I remember as a kid seeing boxers weigh in wearing their boxing trunks. When did it become a big production where they had to strip naked? How heavy could his skivvies have been? At least there weren't a bunch of fuc*ing females around.

Ever ounce counts like in wrestling. An extra ounce could bump you up a size bracket.

Boxers can wear whatever they want when weighing in, BUT they cannot exceed the upper limit for their weight class. For example, a welterweight cannot exceed 147 pounds. Only the heavyweight class has no weight limit. If a boxer exceeds the limit for his weight class by a few ounces, of course he will strip and try again. If he’s still over, he is given 2 hours to lose weight (usually by sweating it off) and try again. If he still doesn’t “make weight”, the match is cancelled, he has to pay the promoter’s expenses, which includes travel expenses for both fighters, and in a professional fight, he has to pay a fine. If it’s a title match, he automatically loses the title. So, as Treeclimber said, every ounce counts.

You asked how heavy could his skivvies have been. Heavy enough to make a difference. The fact that he had to remove them means that he was over the weight limit with them on, and the fact that, after being weighed naked, the audience cheers and he raises his arms in victory, means that he “made weight” with his skivvies off.
