Hiking - Part 10

Slot Canyons

Slot canyons are extremely narrow canyons formed when a crack in the rock has been expanded and carved out by water.  There are many of them in the U.S. desert Southwest.

The canyon can twist and turn.  I like this photo because the color of the rock matches the hiker's skin.

A slot canyon can become extremely narrow, like this tight squeeze.

Hiking up the canyon, you may encounter a dry waterfall, i.e. a cliff, that you have to climb if you want to continue the hike.

And, if there are dips in the trail, you may encounter pools of water to wade through.  This is Matt Sloan in the Northeast Spur Fork canyon in Utah.  Even if you weren't planning on hiking naked, for a pool like this, getting naked may be the most practical option.  A warning: do not hike a slot canyon if rain is expected upstream.  You could be caught in a flash flood with no way to escape.

Some slot canyons even have permanent streams or rivers flowing through them.  This is Parunuweap Canyon, which lies partly in Zion National Park, Utah.

A friend of mine did some beautiful photos of the slot canyons in Utah and gave me 3 different shots. Beautiful photos - but sadly, there are no naked hikers in any of them.
