Sandy Bay Beach is Cape Town's only nude beach. It's unofficial, but nudity is ignored by authorities because the beach is remote. Backed by hills and mountains, it requires at least a 20-minute hike to get to the beach from the nearest parking lot.

An interesting incident happened in 1986. The yacht Amadeus came too close to shore at low tide (perhaps gawking at the naked people there) and grounded on the beach. Naked beach-goers assisted in the rescue by holding the yacht steady while a tow line was attached (above).

Most people don't go swimming, because the water is very cold. The beach is good for surfing, but surfers generally wear wetsuits because of the cold water.
The far end of the beach (away from the entrance trail) has become a gay beach.

Altogether, a good place for sun and fun in Cape Town.

Nude beaches are the best. After baking in the sun for a while, the icy water feels mighty good.
