Poem of the Day - Part 45

Show It At the Beach
by Shel Silverstein

Shel Silverstein (1930-1999) was an author, poet, cartoonist, and songwriter.  Best known for his children's books like A Light In the Attic, he also wrote the Johnny Cash song A Boy Named Sue and was a regular contributor to Playboy magazine.  Above, Silverstein on an assignment for Playboy to a nudist camp.  Silverstein was not gay.  He once visited Fire Island on assignment for Playboy, resulting in a bunch of cartoons that poked fun at the gay men there, but no more than he poked fun at everyone else.

He wrote Show It at the Beach as the lyrics of a song protesting against the closure of nude beaches.  I've illustrated it with suitable photos.

Oh, they won't let us show it at the beach

No, they won't let us show it at the beach

They think we're gonna grab it if it gets within our reach

And they won't let us show it at the beach.

But you can show it in your parlor to most anyone you choose

You can show it at a party with your second shot of booze

You can show it on a corner wearin' overcoat and shoes

But they won't let us show it at the beach.

No, they won't let us show it at the beach, friends

Ah, they won't let us show it at the beach

Oh, they're sure we're gonna grab it if it gets within our reach

So they won't let us show it at the beach.

But you can show it at the movies on the cineramic screen

You can show it in the most sophisticated magazine

You can show it while you're bouncing on the high school trampoline

But they won't let us show it at the beach.

But if you've got a gun it's legal to display it on your hip

You can show your butcher knives to any interested kid

But if it's made for lovin' then you'd better keep it hid

And they won't let us show it at the beach.

Much appreciation for including the scene from "Spartacus" with Manu Bennett (photo #14). In this particular scene, he is brought before three women who want to get a good look at him. He is ordered to remove his loincloth (called a subligaculum in the movie) and stand completely nude as they inspect him. Very hot seeing this hunk of a man being forced to strip naked.

They must have censored that scene in the theatre where I saw "Spartacus." I would definitely remember that scene, and...it wasn't there. Damn.

@Anon - It took a bit of work for me to make #14, combining a video clip from Spartacus with a photo of an audience watching a movie, and then making a gif out of it. I'm glad you liked it.

@Big Dude - There was no nudity in the 1960 movie Spartacus, starring Kirk Douglas and Laurence Olivier, although there was one homoerotic scene. My video clip showing Manu Bennett nude was from the 2010-2013 TV series Spartacus.

I enjoy reading your blog daily!

The blond curly-haired man in the second picture, used to be all over the Internet (a decade or two ago). He might be from Australia? Can't remember.

What ever happened to him? Didn't he used to have a blog? One rarely sees any pictures of him now days. Just curious. He was very unashamed, now he's missing from the public nudie landscape.

Hello from West Seattle

@Anon - the guy in the second photo is Corbett Harper, real name Tim Perry, from Hawaii. The second photo shows him on Little Makena Beach on Maui. He was a student at the University of Hawaii in 2010, where photos came out of him masturbating. He became known as the "speedo student." Since then, he was in some gay porn videos, but I haven't seen him lately.
