Estonian Photos - Part 9

 Estonian Photos

Here's another group of photos from the Tartu Ülikooli museum of anthropology in Estonia.

The museum provides no information about the men, other than the photos came from the Institute of Anatomy.  In particular, it does not say who these men are, or when or why the photos were taken.

My assumption has been that these are military recruits and that the photos were taken between World War I and World War II, when Estonia was an independent country, not part of the Russian Empire (before World War I) or the Soviet Union (after World War II up to 1991).

But that's just a guess.  My anonymous correspondent found another clue about the photos in a Wikipedia article on physical anthropology at the University of Tartu.  The Wikipedia article is in Estonian, not English, though you can get Google to translate it.

In the article, it talks about studies that were done to try to determine whether Estonians were racially "Mongolian."  This sounds crazy to us today, but at the end of the 18th century, Friedrich Blumenbach, the founder of physical anthropology, had categorized Finns and Estonians as Mongolian.

The idea is not as bizarre as it appears.  Finnish and the related Estonian language are unlike all the Indo-European languages, but they are related to languages spoken in the Ural Mountains region of Russia.  Some scholars think the ancestral origin of these languages was in Siberia.

At the time, physical anthropology included the now-discredited practice of phrenology (measuring the skull to predict mental traits).  So, Estonian physical anthropologists did studies measuring the shape of the head, in particular the ratio of the width of the skull to its length.

German scientists concluded that people with "long-headed" skulls were more highly developed.  Naturally, Germanic populations were long-headed.  Estonians were considered short-headed.

Could these naked young men be part of a physical anthropology study to measure their skulls, and is that the reason that their hair is cut so short?

The photos can be downloaded from the museum website in small or large format.  Most of these are the small photos.  The large photos are enormous; it takes about two minutes to download a single photo.  I have downloaded only a few of them in large format, including the photo above.  Click on it to see it larger.  The original photo was so large (over 23 MB) that I reduced it to half-size to show it here, and it's still huge.

My opinion is still that these were military recruits, and the reason their hair is cut short is that they were being inducted into the military.  I find it hard to believe that nearly a thousand young men would allow their heads to be shorn and to pose naked just to participate in an anthropological study for some scientists.

However, assuming that these are new recruits being inducted into the Army, it's quite possible that the Army allowed the scientists at the Institute of Anatomy to photograph and measure its recruits.  That would give the scientists a ready supply of subjects, and it would explain why the photos ended up at the Institute of Anatomy (which had the photo collection before it was given to the Museum of Anthropology).

Heads shaved. Completely naked. Then photographed. Sounds military to me. Curious as to why the men were photographed in pairs, other than to save on film.

they don't seem malnourished to me. But they are so pale... impressive.

We also know that the photos were made on glass plates, not film, so they were very likely trying to save on glass plates by having two men per photo.

It is very interesting seeing some pictures that have penis size that matches overall height, but not always. I enjoy looking at all of the full-frontal pictures, and side profiles where the penis is visible. These are very interesting.

I always enjoy their butts.

642 shows their ribs, so that looks malnourished to me. There are two guys who have a shirtless tan and he is one of them. The other one 644 looks like he was wearing only shorts. Being shirtless means poor laborer. Only-shorts guy might have been a swimmer or diver.

Not all have a weird tan. And earlier photos have men with hair. But those that have a tan, when you look at side view, points to them having their current buzzcut or short hair since the tan reaches high on the head.

Suspect large number of subjects were "volunteered" by the military for the study but earlier subjects don,t appear military so likely started by the Institute of Anatomy locally and then expanded to include military subjects.

What REALLY biugs me is the lack of context available. They take the trouble to scan these images without a link to information on context of that study. (I am still trying to find out)

I have completed long research project on those Estonian images and though I should share result with you. (since you provided the original link to allow me to do this.
565 subjects.

1 General:
23% have overhang
29% have full foreskin coverage
6% have 3/4 covered
9% are 1/2 covered
6% are 1/4 covered
27% have fully exposed glans.

2 More booken down:
23% have overhang
10% have full coverage but closed over meatus
19% have full coverage but meatus not covered
Partial coverage:
6% have 3/4 coverage
9% have 1/2 coverage
6% have 1/4 coverage
Bare glans:
6% have bare glans, obvious uncut thats tays retracted
12% have bare glans, unsure of status
10% have bare glans, circumcised.

(Someone had told me that circumcision was at some point mandatory in Estonian millitary, but those stats show it was not. Some books from the 1970s had told me about 20% of aduts end up with permanently retracted foreskin and this more of less matches those stats when you exlude those obiously cut). (this is no longer the case since the 1980s as parents told to not retract/wash boy's foreskin which delays when it becomes retracible during which every erection causes skin to stretch since it cannot retract to accomodate lenghtening).

In order to download, select a photo, then on the page that comes up, click on the link below the photo for Tartu Ulikooli muuseum, and then that page lets you download either the low-res or high-res image.
